Ladder Safety Systems

Safety when ascending and descending a ladder system remains paramount but also it is important that the worker can complete the work by ascending and descending comfortably and without restrictions.

In the event of a fall, a worker attached to a ladder safety system is far less likely to be injured than when relying on a traditional caged ladder. Cage systems do not arrest falls and can in some circumstances prevent fall arrest systems from working.

Detailed below are the main types of ladder safety system:

Wire Based

Wire based vertical fall arrest systems conforming to BS EN 353-1 (2014) provide a reliable and effective means of protecting against falls from vertical ladders.

The system can be fitted to ladders on poles, towers, and much more. Free running attachment devices provide operatives with the security of being constantly attached to the system while also having both hands free to go about their duties. If a worker should fall from the system, the device immediately locks onto the wire system and arrests the fall, minimizing fall distance and associated impact loads.

Rails

Rail Based

This system comprises a fall arrest carriage inside a guide rail. In the event of a fall the carriage positively locks into closely spaced notches so that a fall is arrested within a few centimetres. Falling forces are spread evenly over a minimum of four mounting brackets, not just by the top bracket as in the case of wire systems.

Available as a rail for attaching to existing ladders or as a complete ladder with built in safety rail for new access installations, rail based systems can be specified in aluminium, hot-dip galvanized steel and stainless steel to suit even the harshest environments. Pivoting rung options that present a slim line profile when not in use are available if aesthetics are a priority.

Workers using fixed ladder systems should undertake training. Click below to find out more about our fixed ladder rescue course.

Testing & Recertification
  • Horizontal & Vertical Lifelines

It is generally accepted that the starting point when considering all work at height should be the hierarchy of control. Once it’s determined that working at height is essential, the next step is to ensure workers are not exposed to unnecessary risk and that suitable and sufficient means for protection from falls from height are in place such as a fall protection system.

  • Testing & Certification

All fall protection systems including eye bolts and single point anchors used for the purpose of fall protection, fall arrest and restraint, must be tested and carry a test certificate to comply with UK legislation.
